NCCU's Williams Wins CIAA Championship in Javelin Throw
     (Durham, NC - Friday, April 20, 2001)  In day one action of the 2001 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, North Carolina Central University's Carmen Williams (Durham, NC/Hillside H.S.) claimed conference champion honors in the women's javelin throw with a toss of 113 feet, 11 inches.
     NCCU's Angela Brown recorded her best long jump of the outdoor season (19 feet, 5 1/4 inches) to place second and earn all-conference honors. Brown's leap also was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 24-26 in South Edwardsville, Illinois.
     Eagle freshman Gary Brown finished fifth in the men's shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 4 inches.
     NCCU will have seven runners in Saturday's finals. Sophomore Jason Smoots advanced in the men's 100-meter and 200-meter dashes by winning both of his heats with times of 10.88 and 21.40, respectively. Rosalyn Pollard will also race in two finals Saturday, the women's 100-meter and 200-meter dashes after winning both of her heats with times of 12.61 and 25.60, respectively. Cheron Clark and Kennisha Moten advanced in the women's 400m dash. Clark posted the third-fastest time of 56.32, while Moten was fifth with a 56.60. Katerina Glosova won her heat with the second-fastest time (2:16.63)  in the women's 800m run to advance to the finals. Randy V'Estres ran a 2:00.92 in the men's 800m run to advance, and Jeanna Harbison recorded a 26.07 to qualify for the finals of the women's 200m dash.
