GLOSOVA'S M.V.P. PERFORMANCE LEADS NCCU TO BEST
CIAA OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD FINISH
NCCU's Jason Smoots Still the Fastest Man in the Conference
PETERSBURG, VA -- North Carolina Central University senior Katerina
Glosova led the Lady Eagles to a second place effort at the 2002 CIAA
Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Petersburg, VA, marking the
highest outdoor team finish for the NCCU women in school history.
Glosova was voted as the 2002 CIAA Most Outstanding
Female Track Athlete after three-peating in the 1500m (4:55.75) and 3000m
(11:05.41) runs, winning the 800m run (2:11.09), and running the anchor
leg of the first place 4x400m relay squad.
NCCU freshman Chanda Powell also played
a major role in the team's success with second place efforts in the triple
jump (11.42m) and 100m hurdles (14.26), and a championship title in the
long jump (5.69m). Powell also ran the first leg of the second place 4x100m
relay squad.
NCCU junior Rosalyn Pollard also had
a busy, yet productive day for the Lady Eagles. Pollard won the 100m dash
(11.99), placed third in the 200m dash (24.57), and ran the second leg
of both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Other All-CIAA performances were turned in
by freshman Elaine Lyons with a third place finish in the 3000m
run (13:14.83), and junior Kennisha Moten with a third place finish
in the 400m dash (55.87). Moten also placed fifth in the 200m dash (25.22),
opened the 4x400m relay, and anchored the 4x100m relay. Freshman Lindsay
Holmes contributed a sixth place effort in the 1500m run (5:37.23)
and ran the third leg of the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
On the men's side, NCCU junior Jason Smoots
proved himself again as the fastest man in the CIAA by repeating as the
conference champion in the 100m dash with a time of 10.33. Smoots, a three-time
NCAA Division II Champion, also ran a blazing anchor leg of the 4x100m
relay, taking the stick in fourth place and charging the Eagles to second
place in a photo finish. Sophomore Jamie Richardson, freshman Ronnie
Pollard, and freshman Steven Enoch also earned All-Conference
honors on the 4x100m relay squad.
Travis Rogers, a back-up center on
the men's basketball team, earned a conference championship in the discus
throw with a toss of 42.70 meters. Enoch received All-CIAA honors by placing
third in both the long jump (7.09m) and triple jump (14.88m). Randy
V'Estres also earned All-Conference recognition with a third place
effort in the 5000m run (17:58.84).
The NCCU men's 4x400m relay team, consisting
of Austin-Lamar Hogan, Pollard, Richard Davis and Michael
Simms, received All-CIAA accolades with a third place finish.
As a team, the NCCU men placed fourth with
78 points, trailing third place Livingstone College by just 17 points.
St. Augustine's won its sixth consecutive
title for the women (173 points) and the fifth straight for the men (212
points).
