NCCU'S MEN, WOMEN PLACE THIRD AT CIAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Yolanda Barber     PETERSBURG, VA -- North Carolina Central University took third place in both the men's and women's team competitions at the 2005 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Rogers Stadium on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.
     NCCU freshman Yolanda Barber had a big day for the Lady Eagles, winning individual conference titles in the 800m (2:21.71) and 1500m (5:01.00) runs, and finishing in third place as a member of the 4x400m relay (3:53.95). Fellow freshman Nina Warren won the 100m dash (12.37) and earned all-CIAA honors with a third place effort in the 200m dash (25.27), while also running on the third place 4x100m relay (47.55) squad.
     NCCU sophomore Aisha Brown, who won the 3000m run on Friday, finished second behind Barber in the 1500m run (5:10.82) for all-conference honors.
     NCCU freshman Eric Speer claimed the lone men's conference title by winning the 800m run (1:53.80). Speer also took third place in the 1500m run (4:05.79) and was a member of the second place 4x400m relay (3:15.70) team, along with Austin-Lamar Hogan, Rashaad Lee and Detric Branch
     NCCU senior Travis Rogers earned all-CIAA recognition with a second place toss in the discus throw (39.92m), while Branch (100m dash, 11.13), Lee (800m, 1:57.14) and Steve Easley (pole vault, 3.13m) all placed third to claim all-conference honors.
     St. Augustine's women won their ninth consecutive CIAA outdoor track & field crown by amassing 238.5 points, the most scored by any Lady Falcons squad during the championship run. Bowie State University, which placed sixth a year ago, enjoyed its best finish in more than 15 years by placing second with 111 points, while NCCU captured third place with 77 points. 
     St. Augustine's men made it eight straight titles during the outdoor season by tallying 213 points. Host Virginia State placed second with 108 points, while NCCU finished third with 91 points.
