| NCCU'S SMOOTS, MOTEN ADVANCE TO NCAA TRACK FINALS
(Edwardsville, Illinois) Two North Carolina
Central University student-athletes have advanced to the finals of their
respective events at the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field
Championships at Ralph Korte Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois
University-Edwardsville.
Sophomore Jason Smoots (Gadsden, Alabama)
had to withstand two rounds of qualifying in the men's 100-meter dash in
order to advance to Saturday's final. The reigning 55m dash indoor national
champion, Smoots won his section of the preliminary round in a time of
10.43, then ran a 10.64 in a cold and rainy semifinal round for the chance
to run for the national title on Saturday (May 26) at 7:20 p.m.
Junior Kennisha Moten (Fayetteville,
NC), who entered the meet with the 12th fastest time in the women's 400m
dash in Division II, posted the eighth best time (57.03) in the preliminaries
to qualify for the finals on Saturday at 7:10 p.m.
On Friday (May 25), senior Angela
Brown (Abilene, Texas) competes in the long jump finals at 7:30 p.m.,
while junior Katerina Glosova (Cernotin, Czech Republic) hits the
track for the 800m preliminaries at the same time. Smoots runs the 200m
preliminaries at 7:45 p.m.
