NCCU'S SMOOTS WINS 100-METER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Moten Earns First Individual All-America Honors
Jason Smoots
(Edwardsville, Illinois) North Carolina Central University sophomore Jason Smoots ran his fastest time of the season to win the national championship of the 100-meter dash at the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ralph Korte Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
Smoots' time of 10.31, which qualifies him for the 2001 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 21-24 in Eugene, Oregon, edged Saint Augustine's College freshman Marquis Davis (10.33) and Livingstone College freshman Jordan Vaden (10.34).
The Gadsden, Alabama native had to withstand two qualifying rounds on Thursday in order to advance to Saturday's final. He won his section of the preliminary round in a time of 10.43, then ran a 10.64 in a cold and rainy semifinal round for the chance to run for the national title.
Smoots is now the reigning national champion of the indoor 55m dash and outdoor 100m dash. Last year as a freshman, Smoots finished third in both events to earn All-America honors.
Junior Kennisha Moten earned her first individual All-America honors in the 400m dash. The Fayetteville, NC native entered the national championship meet with the 12th fastest time in Division II, but stepped up to the challenge to place seventh in the finals with a time of 57.14.
On Friday, junior Katerina Glosova (Cernotin, Czech Republic) ran a personal best in the preliminaries of the 800m run, but missed qualifying for the finals by less than a second. Glosova finished 11th overall with a time of 2:11.30.
Senior Angela Brown (Abilene, Texas) struggled in the long jump finals, placing 21st with a leap of 4.85 meters.
