NCCU's Smoots Ends USA Outdoor Championship Run in Semifinals

(PALO ALTO, CA - June 21, 2002)  North Carolina Central University junior sprinter Jason Smoots advanced to Friday night's semifinals of the 100-meter dash at the 2002 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, but did not qualify for Saturday's final.
A five-time collegiate national champion and native of Gadsden, Alabama, Smoots posted a first round time of 10.44 to qualify for the semifinals later that evening. He then ran along side world record holder Maurice Greene and defending USA outdoor 100m champion Tim Montgomery in the second heat of the semifinals, but his time of 10.33 fell shy of the mark to advance to the finals.
"He did not qualify for the finals, but he did a good job," NCCU head coach Michael Lawson said. "There was a lot of pressure on him running in the premier heat of the semifinals."
"I thought I ran well," Smoots said. "It just wasn't my day."
