SMOOTS TO COMPETE AT U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Jason Smoots - photo by All-Pro Photo     Jason Smoots, a six-time national champion sprinter at North Carolina Central University from 1999-2003, will compete in the 100-meter dash at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Saturday, July 10, in Sacramento, California.
     Smoots' quest for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team begins at 3 p.m. (PST) Saturday, as one of 32 runners in the 100m preliminaries. The Gadsden, Alabama native will run in lane four of the third heat. Twenty-four athletes (the top four finishers in each of the four heats, plus the next eight fastest times) will advance to the quarterfinals scheduled later that day at 5:22. The semifinal and final races of the 100m dash will be held Sunday (July 11).
     Smoots will celebrate his 24th birthday on Tuesday, July 13.
