LEROY T. WALKER LEGACY
During his unprecedented tenure as head coach at North Carolina Central
University, Dr. LeRoy T. Walker lifted the Eagle track & field program
to a point of international prominence. Under Walker's reign, N.C.
Central produced 30 National Titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic
Medalists. His track & field resume boasts accomplishments such
as Olympic Coach (1960), Olympic Consultant (1964), Head Coach of USA National
Team (1970), Organizer of Pan-Africa-USA International Meet (1971), and
Coordinator of Martin Luther King Games and USA National Team (1973). As
President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, Walker was instrumental in bringing
the Olympic Games to Atlanta in the Summer of 1996.
The LeRoy T. Walker Olympic Development Meet has come a long way since its creation in 1991. North Carolina Central head track & field coach Mike Lawson started the invitational meet mostly with borrowed equipment from outside supporters. Through the years the L.T. Walker meet has flourished, gathering some of the finest athletes in the region to pay tribute to a "living legend." And while the L.T. Walker meet maintains a stellar reputation, the event would not be possible if not for the support and dedication of many fine individuals and organizations.
