NCCU'S McQUEEN, PEREZ AND SPAIN PLACE SECOND IN CIAA TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

ETTRICK, VA – North Carolina Central University freshmen Emily McQueen (Silver Springs, Md.), Antionette Spain (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore transfer Andres Perez (Santiago, Chile) placed second in their respective singles brackets at the 2007 CIAA Tennis Championships on the campus of Virginia State University in Ettrick, Va.
Spain, the No. 3 seed within the No. 5 singles group, defeated Jasmine Rivera of Shaw University (6-2, 7-5) and Jocelyn Braswell of Virginia State University (6-4, 6-1) to advance to the championship match against Fayetteville State University's Contessa Sanchez.
After dropping the first set, Spain fought back in the second before eventually succumbing to Sanchez in a second-set tiebreaker and losing the match (6-2, 7-6 (1). Spain finished the championships with a second place singles finish and the same in No. 3 doubles.
McQueen, who was Spain's partner in the duo's run to a second place finish in the No. 3 doubles pairings, played No. 6 singles for NCCU and won her first two matches in dominate fashion. She defeated Kiaria Henderson of SU (6-1, 6-0) and controlled the court against Janae Johnson (6-3, 6-1).
McQueen won the first set of her championship match against FSU's Arie Bennett, but lost the final two (6-2, 6-2) to fall to Bennett (5-7, 6-2, 6-2).
Perez, competing in No. 1 singles, advanced to the championship match fairly easily bouncing Michael Roberson of Saint Augustine's College (6-0, 6-0) and Justin Stuckey of Johnson C. Smith University (6-2,6-4) in his first two matches. In the CIAA Championship match, Perez was beaten by SU's Ibukun llesanmi (6-3, 6-1).
NCCU's men finished fourth with a total of 38 points, while head coach David Nass' women's squad placed fifth with 35 points.
