| NCCU VOLLEYBALL ADDS FIVE RECRUITS
DURHAM, NC (May 15, 2002)
North Carolina Central University has added five recruits to the women's
volleyball program, including two from North Carolina and a trio from Michigan.
The newest Lady Eagles are Andrea Hargrow,
a 5-10 outside hitter out of Hillside High School in Durham, NC; Brenda
Brown, a 5-7 outside hitter from Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville,
NC; Jocelyn Atkins, a 5-11 middle hitter from Southfield, MI; Ariel
Germain, a 5-7 setter from Detroit, MI; and Cherie Wilson, a
5-10 outside hitter from Niles, MI.
Hargrow was selected All-Conference in the Pac-6
during the 2001 volleyball season, won the Coach's Award in 2000, and is
a regular on the school's academic honor roll. "Andrea is a very gifted
athlete," said NCCU women's volleyball head coach Ingrid Wicker. "She is
athletic, extremely versatile, and will add depth to our outside and middle
positions. It is always great to be able to find good talent in your hometown."
Brown was a First Team All-Conference and
All-Tournament Team selection in the Mid-Southeastern Conference, while
also taking home Conference Player of the Year honors. "Brenda is a bundle
of dynamite," said Wicker. "I am impressed with her athleticism and explosiveness.
She is a strong player physically and is able to play anywhere on the net."
Atkins was one of the leading hitters and
middle blockers at Farmington High School, and also threw the discus and
shot put on the track & field team. "Jocelyn will be a contender for
the starting middle hitter position," Wicker said. "She is a very aggressive
young player, which will help her adjust quickly to the collegiate game."
Germain was named First Team All-Region and
Second Team All-State during her senior season at Renaissance High School,
and is also a three-time All-City honoree. "Ariel is a great young setter
who comes from a traditionally strong program in Detroit," said Wicker.
"She will bring experience, great athleticism and mental toughness to the
Lady Eagles. Setters are a rarity to find, and I have found a jewel."
Wilson, a transfer from Rutgers University,
was a three-year varsity letterwinner and a Big 8 All-Conference pick at
Niles High School. "Cherie is a natural leader and will add great depth
to the team," Wicker said. "She is able to play anywhere on the court and
has an effective jump serve. Cherie will be a dominating player in the
CIAA."
