NCCU WINS HAMPTON VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT AS ONLY UNBEATEN
HAMPTON, Va. - North Carolina Central University won Hampton University's
women's volleyball Labor Day Tournament by sweeping through the NCAA Division
I competition.
NCCU, the lone participating member of the
NCAA Division II, blanked The Citadel 3-0 (30-25, 34-32, 30-21) and Hampton
3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-21) on the first day, then defeated South Carolina
State 3-2 (30-22, 31-33, 30-28, 24-30, 15-7) and Winston-Salem State 3-1
(28-30, 30-12, 30-14, 30-9) on the final day.
The Eagles were led by junior transfer Shari
Matthews (Bridgetown, Barbados), who was named the Tournament M.V.P.
Another NCCU junior transfer Kai Wright (Old Harbour, Jamaica) was
voted to the All-Tournament Team.
NCCU (6-3) travels to Fayetteville State on
Sept. 6 to begin conference play.
