MATTHEWS NAMED CIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK, CRAWFORD-CROOKS COACH OF THE WEEK

     HAMPTON, VA -  North Carolina Central University junior outside hitter Shari Matthews and head volleyball coach Georgette Crawford-Crooks received weekly honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the week of Oct. 2-8.
     Matthews, a 5-7 native of Bridgetown, Barbados, was named CIAA Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Matthews recorded 74 kills in just nine games, including a 42-kill performance against Catawba College. The 42-kills by Matthews were the best single-match performance in recorded NCCU history. 
     Matthews currently leads the CIAA in hitting percentage (.416), total kills (640) and kills per game (6.40 per game). Matthews also ranks fourth in the CIAA in service aces per game (0.83) and is second in the conference in total service aces (83), digs per game (3.47) and total digs (347). Matthews has already recorded NCCU highs for kills in a single-match (42) and kills in season (640).
     Crawford-Crooks, a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania in her first year at the helm of NCCU volleyball, led the Eagles to a 1-1 record during the week, including a 3-1 win against divisional foe Saint Augustine's College.
     NCCU (21-8, 10-0) has won 33 consecutive CIAA contests overall and 10 straight conference games this season.
       NCCU will step out of conference to face Division I Campbell University on Oct. 10 in Buie's Creek, N.C. at 7:00 p.m.
