NCCU'S MATTHEWS BREAKS NCAA VOLLEYBALL RECORD
     Eagles Defeat St. Augustine's to Advance to Fifth Straight CIAA Title Match

Shari Matthews      FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolina Central University junior outside hitter Shari Matthews broke the NCAA Division II record for kills in a single season during the Eagles' 3-0 (30-16, 34-32, 30-17) semifinal victory over Saint Augustine's College at the 2006 CIAA Volleyball Championship
 inside Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C. 
      A native of Bridgetown, Barbados, Matthews tallied 24 kills and 20 digs against the Falcons, and now has 929 kills this season. The previous record of 919 kills was accomplished by Lucy Arroyo of Henderson State in 2001, which Matthews passed in the second game Friday night. 
      NCCU improves to 31-12 overall, setting the single-season standard for the most wins in school history. 
      The two-time defending conference champions, NCCU advances to the CIAA title match for the fifth consecutive year, facing Virginia Union University Saturday at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last season's final.
