Eagles Defeat St. Augustine's to Advance
to Fifth Straight CIAA Title Match
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolina Central University junior outside
hitter Shari Matthews broke the NCAA Division II record for kills
in a single season during the Eagles' 3-0 (30-16, 34-32, 30-17) semifinal
victory over Saint Augustine's College at the 2006 CIAA Volleyball Championship
inside Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.
A native of Bridgetown, Barbados, Matthews
tallied 24 kills and 20 digs against the Falcons, and now has 929 kills
this season. The previous record of 919 kills was accomplished by Lucy
Arroyo of Henderson State in 2001, which Matthews passed in the second
game Friday night.
NCCU improves to 31-12 overall, setting
the single-season standard for the most wins in school history.
The two-time defending conference champions,
NCCU advances to the CIAA title match for the fifth consecutive year, facing
Virginia Union University Saturday at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last season's
final.
