NCCU'S BROWN, WICKER EARN WEEKLY CIAA VOLLEYBALL HONORS
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina
Central University sophomore outside hitter Brenda Brown has been
selected as the CIAA Women's Volleyball Player of the Week and Lady Eagle
head coach Ingrid Wicker has earned CIAA Women's Volleyball Coach
of the Week honors, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced
Tuesday (Sept. 30).
In the Lady Eagles lone match last week on
Sept. 24, Brown joined the elite "20-20 Club" with 21 kills and 22 digs
during a thrilling 3-2 victory over host UNC-Pembroke. She also tallied
3 blocks, 2 assists and 2 service aces during the match.
A graduate of Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville,
NC, Brown became only the third Lady Eagle in the past 10 seasons to amass
20 kills and 20 digs. Her prior match-high at NCCU was 12 kills during
her rookie campaign versus Elizabeth City State (Sept. 27, 2002).
Brown has spent a majority of the season as
a defensive specialist, but moved back to the front row as an outside hitter.
She is currently second on the team with 143 digs (2.42 per game).
Wicker, now in her 10th season at NCCU, earned
CIAA Coach of the Week honors after guiding the Lady Eagles to a dramatic
3-2 (30-25, 24-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-12) victory over UNC-Pembroke on Sept.
24. The win snapped a 6-game losing streak to the Braves dating back to
1998.
NCCU is currently leading the CIAA Western
Division standings with a 3-0 divisional record.
