NEWKIRK LEADS NCCU PAST ST. AUGUSTINE'S AT FORMER HIGH SCHOOL
RALEIGH, NC -- North Carolina Central University rookie Jasmine Newkirk
returned to her alma mater of Broughton High School and led four Lady Eagles
to score double figures during a 73-61 win over host Saint Augustine's
College in Raleigh, N.C. Saturday night.
Newkirk, who led Broughton to the North Carolina
4-A state championship two seasons ago, showed off in front of her hometown
fans by amassing a game-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds and
four steals.
NCCU senior Cassie King, a native of nearby
Wendell, N.C., contributed 15 points, five boards, two steals and two blocked
shots as the Lady Eagles claimed their ninth win in the last 10 games.
Freshman Latoya Bennett chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, while
sophomore transfer LaVonna Hailey added 10 points, five assists, three
boards and three steals for NCCU (12-5, 7-3 CIAA).
Saint Augustine's (4-14, 3-9 CIAA) was topped
by Terrica Morris with 17 points.
