NWACHUKWU'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS NCCU TO 63-49 WIN AT LIVINGSTONE
NCCU Senior King Grabs 1,000th Career Rebound
DURHAM, NC - Four North Carolina Central University
Lady Eagles scored in double-figures as NCCU defeated Livingstone College
63-49 on Saturday at Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C. The win was the
10th straight for NCCU, who has also won 14 of its last 15 contests.
NCCU (17-5, 12-3) was paced by freshman forward
Jori Nwachukwu, who amassed her sixth double-double of the season by amassing
19 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore forward
LaQuanda Williams, fresh off a career-high 27 points against Virginia Union
University on Thursday, contributed 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from
the field. NCCU All-time leading scorer Cassie King (10 points) and senior
guard Casey Daniel (11 points) were the other Lady Eagles in double-figures.
In the closing minute of the contest, King
grabbed her ninth rebound of the game and the 1,000th of her career at
NCCU to become only the second Lady Eagle in school history to amass 1,000
points and 1,000 rebounds (Pame Sawyer, 1,095 points/1,077 rebounds, 1986-90).
King, NCCU's all-time leading scorer, currently has 1,965 career points
to go along with her 1,000 career rebounds.
After trailing 11-2 in the first five minutes
of the contest, the Lady Eagles closed the first half on a 29-11 run to
lead 31-22 at halftime. The Lady Blue Bears eventually cut the lead to
three points at 47-44 midway through the second half, but the Lady Eagles
closed out the second half strong on a 16-5 run to give them the 63-49
win.
Livingstone (7-13, 4-11) was topped by Lina
Brown with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
