NCCU SWEEPS WEEKLY CIAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORS
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central
University swept the weekly CIAA Women's Basketball awards on Monday (Feb.
12), when sophomore forward LaQuanda Williams was named Player of
the Week, freshman forward Jori Nwachukwu was named Rookie of the
Week and head coach Joli Robinson was named Coach of the Week.
Williams, a native of Durham, N.C.,
averaged 22.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in three contests
during the week. On Feb. 8, Williams scored a career-high 27 points and
added six rebounds in a 63-56 win over the Virginia Union University Lady
Panthers. Since Williams joined the team in late December, NCCU is 13-1.
Nwachukwu, who was a stand-out at Bishop
McNamara High School in Upper Marlboro, MD, averaged 11.7 points and 13
rebounds per game during three NCCU victories last week. In her best outing,
the 5-10 forward recorded 19 points and 17 rebounds at Livingstone College,
resulting in her sixth double-double of the season.. This is Nwachukwu's
fifth CIAA Rookie of the Week honor (Dec. 4, Dec. 11, Dec. 30, Feb 5, Feb.
12).
Robinson, in her 11th year as head coach
at NCCU, was named Coach of the Week after the Lady Eagles posted a perfect
3-0 record on the week with victories over Fayetteville State University
(83-63), VUU (63-56) and LC (63-49). The Lady Eagles have now won 10 consecutive
contests, 14 of their last 15 games overall, four straight road games and
seven in a row at home.
NCCU, who leads the CIAA Western Division
by two games, will host CIAA Eastern division-leading Elizabeth City
State University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. inside McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
