LADY EAGLES EASILY WIN 14th STRAIGHT, 91-71, OVER ST. PAUL'S, ON
KING AND McGHEE'S SENIOR NIGHT
DURHAM, NC – Three North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles scored
in double-figures as NCCU defeated St. Paul’s College 91-71 on Tuesday
at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium in Durham, N.C. The contest constituted
the final home-game for NCCU All-time leading scorer Cassie King and fellow
senior Brittany McGhee. The win was the 14th straight for NCCU, who has
also won 18 of its last 19 contests
NCCU (21-5, 16-3) was paced by sophomore forward
LaQuanda Williams, who scored a game-high 25 points and added five rebounds,
three assists and four steals. Since Williams joined the lineup, NCCU is
17-1. Freshman guard Jasmine Newkirk, fresh off being named a member of
the 2007 All-CIAA team, converted 8-of-13 field goals for 17 points.
King, who had her jersey retired after the
game, scored 22 points, nabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists
in NCCU's final home conference game as a member of the CIAA.
Over the last three years, NCCU squads led
by King have amassed a 39-11 record (.780 winning percentage) inside McLendon-McDougald
Gym and an overall record of 74-39 (.654 winning percentage). During King’s
tenure at NCCU the Lady Eagles are a perfect 6-0 against SPC, 3-3 in the
CIAA tournament and 1-1 in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
King's 2,030 points are good for seventh in CIAA history and her 1,035
career rebounds are second at NCCU all-time and eighth in conference history.
She is the only second player in CIAA history and 15th player in NCAA Division
II history to amass more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.
Coach Joli Robinson’s team finishes up the
regular-season on Saturday at Brayboy Gymnasium on the campus of Johnson
C. Smith University at 5:30 p.m.
By virtue of JCSU's loss against Fayetteville State University and
Elizabeth City State University's loss against Bowie State University,
NCCU has locked up the CIAA Western Division crown and the No. 1 seed in
the upcoming CIAA Tournament.
