NCCU FALLS TO COLUMBUS STATE DESPITE KING'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE
DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University
senior forward Casey King recorded her second double-double of the
season and 37th of her career (20 points and 11 rebounds) as Columbus State
University defeated the Lady Eagles 75-73 during the first game of the
2006
Millennium Hotel Lady Eagle Classic at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium
in Durham, N.C.
King, a 6-0 native of Wendell, N.C., filled
the box score, adding three blocks and three steals to her double-double
in just 28 minutes of play. NCCU (2-2) sophomore transfer LaVonna
Hailey set a Lady Eagle Classic record with 11 assists, the most in
the 10-year history of the event. Hailey also contributed nine points and
four steals, while junior guard Jennifer Hukill had 14 points, including
two three-point field goals.
The Lady Cougars were led by junior guard
Kayleigh Epps, who amassed 21 points, five steals and three assists.
CSU (3-2) senior center Cherwonna Walker recorded 12 points and nine rebounds
(three offensive) as the Lady Cougars outrebounded the Lady Eagles 43-35.
In the second game of the night Elizabeth
City State University comfortably defeated Armstrong Atlantic State University
70-53.
2005 All-CIAA performer Celeste Trahan led
ECSU (3-2) with 30 points (14-23 from the field) and 14 rebounds, while
senior point guard Deanna Price added 12 points, nine assists, nine steals
and six assists.
AASU (3-2) was led by Jasmine Herron (nine
points, four rebounds and three assists) and Kaneetha Gordon (nine points
and 11 rebounds). AASU senior guard Sarah Brown hit three three-point field
goals to finish with nine points.
All four teams will continue play on Saturday
in the 2006
Millenium Hotel Lady Eagle Classic. CSU will face ECSU at 2:00 p.m.
and NCCU will square-off against AASU at 4:00 p.m. |
