NCCU'S NWACHUKWU VOTED CIAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central University freshman forward Jori
Nwachukwu (pronounced Jor-ee Wah-choo-koo) was voted as the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week,
the conference office announced Monday (Dec. 4).
A 5-10 native of Upper Marlboro, Md., Nwachukwu
averaged 13.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games during the week of
Nov. 26-Dec. 2, while adding three steals, two blocks and an assist. She
shot 59.1 percent from the field (13-of-22) and 73.7 percent from the free
throw line (14-of-19) as the Lady Eagles posted a 2-1 record with wins
over Saint Paul's and Armstrong Atlantic State.
In her best outing, Nwachukwu amassed her
first collegiate double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds during an
85-55 win at St. Paul's on Nov. 28.
She is currently averaging 12.4 points (12th
in CIAA) and 8.6 rebounds (sixth in CIAA) for NCCU (3-2), and is shooting
57.5 percent (fourth in CIAA) from the field.
As a senior at Bishop McNamara High School,
Nwachukwu was recognized as All-Metro DC Honorable Mention by USA Today.
