Two years ago Brandon McEachern arrived in Los Angeles intending to become an actor.
A former N.C. Central University student majoring in theatre, McEachern said he was ready for the bright lights of Hollywood.
He soon discovered that black Hollywood was not ready for him. Three days after his arrival, he was on a different career path.
“I felt like they wanted me to be the stereotypical black actor,” McEachern said.
“I wanted to rebel. I had to figure out how I could entertain the industry without being someone I wasn’t.”
Then Broccoli City Clothing was born. The name came to McEachern years earlier in a high school freestyle battle.
“I’m from Greensboro and I tried to think of a clever way to relay that through rhyme, so broccoli is the green, and city, that’s the boro,” said McEachern.
Broccoli City Clothing represents a healthy lifestyle, a lifestyle that’s about being true to who you are.
“The search for identity in vast Broccoli City is about confidence in who you are,” he said.
Since late 2006 the clothing line has done very well in LA.
“We have thrown major parties and have the support of many established names,” said McEachern.
Some of the parties thrown by BC Clothing include parties for KING and Style and Substance Magazine.

Nick Cannon is also a contact from the BC family.
“We have worked with Nick Cannon. He is a cool dude,” said McEachern
McEachern still accredits Central for a lot of his knowledge. “I learned a lot at Central, and several professors had an impression on me: Ms. Forte, Dr. Collins, Dr. Carl, and Dr. Norfleet. I thank them so much for all their encouragement.”
The son of a deacon, McEachern was the youngest child, and he had to learn to entertain himself.
“I feel if you can entertain yourself, you can entertain anyone. I spent a lot of time as a child trying to make myself happy, you know, entertaining myself.”
His parents are very supportive of his progress with BC.
“I feel very blessed to have them,” McEachern said.
Another major part of BC clothing is the Cabbage family, the people who make BC possible.
“I grind for my family and those who believed in me from jump. My main goal is to get all my people recognized,” said McEachern.
Broccoli City is also responsible for a community outreach program. “We go out to the schools and talk with the kids about being themselves and not being pressured by media and society to be like the majority,” McEachern said.
“You will never get anywhere trying to be cool. Keep God first and everything else is everything else,” said McEachern.
