Alum rebuilds his nest

For the past few years, N.C. Central University’s athletic department has benefited from the contributions of a proud alum.

Danny Worthy has been NCCU’s assistant athletic director of marketing since Aug. 2006.

Worthy, who attended NCCU from 1972 to 1976, plays a significant role in the recruiting process.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., he is the middle of three male children.

Worthy’s youngest brother, James, is an NBA legend.

In 1996, James was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. It wasn’t until recently that Danny recognized his youngest brother’s career.

“A few years ago, I began looking at some of his old game tapes. I really didn’t realize how good he actually was” said Worthy.

“When James played, I didn’t look at him as a player; I looked at him as my brother.”

While at NCCU, Worthy played on the freshman basketball team in 1972.

He was featured in “Who’s Who Among College Athletics” while at NCCU.

Danny Worthy is a charter member of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary band fraternity.

In 1973, Worthy joined the Alpha Kappa chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Worthy takes pride in helping NCCU’s recruitment process.

Worthy spent 18 years in Texas prior to obtaining his current position at NCCU.

While recruiting, Worthy hopes to introduce athletes to the HBCU experience.

“I want athletes to realize that the same quality education they receive at a dominant Division I school, they can obtain from NCCU,” said Worthy.

“I feel that it is imperative for athletes to learn about their culture.”

Worthy has successfully recruited a handful of Texas athletes to NCCU thus far: Jason Hervey, Xavier Joe, Phillip Branch and Jeffrey Nash.

He has also recruited his son, Joshua Worthy to NCCU.

“I really enjoy doing what I can for the University,” said Worthy.

“I believe that NCCU can compete against schools like Duke and UNC. NCCU will continue to become a winning program. I can see it.”
