N.C. Central University hosted its first home meet at the L.T. Walker Invitational last Saturday.

Competing against NCCU were four other institutions: Bowie State University, Shaw University, Saint Paul’s College, and Mount Olive College.

NCCU dominated by achieving a total of 19 winnings, along with nine second place finishes and nine third places finishes, totaling 37 medals for the Eagles.

“We had a tremendous day, and I was proud of them especially because we were at home,” said Michael Lawson, NCCU track and field head coach.

Senior Eric Smalls, junior Will Scott, and sophomore Desinia Johnson had outstanding esults winning two medals a piece.

Smalls won the discus throw (44.30m) and the shot put (14.70m).

Scott led the long jump with a distance of 2.10m and the triple jump with a distance of 14.35m.

Johnson won the 800m run (2:22.38) and the 1500m run in 4:49.07.

Other Eagles guaranteed remarkable winnings.

Kimberly Derrickson won first place in the javelin throw with 33.00m, while Christina Smith with 30.80m on the second place.

Latasha Jones won the shot put (12.50m).

Jessica Mills won the triple jump (11.49m) and Mark Davis won the high jump (2.03m).

Brandon Jones won the 800m (1:55.04). Robert Curington won the 1500m for the men’s team with 4:17.52.

Continuing on the winning strike, NCCU captured first place winnings in other events.

In the men’s and women’s 4x100 meter relay, the times were 40.99 seconds for the men and 48.47 seconds for the women.

The 4x400 relay was also dominated by NCCU’s men and women with times of 3:17.85 and 3:58.29.

Other significant winnings were achieved by Ambria Alexander in the 200m dash and in the 400m dash. Maurice Gailey ran in conjunction with Alexander in the 200m dash.

The Eagles will travel next weekend to Raleigh to compete in the Raleigh Relays First Race.
