Memorial Services for N.C. Central University alumni Harry Glenn, were held on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. in front of the Hoey Administration Building. Glenn perished in the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
Glenn worked on the 97th floor of the first tower to collapse for Marsh & McLennan, a software company. He graduated in 1983 with a degree in business administration.
Glenn’s three nieces Latoya, Tracey and Valerie Cobb, spoke on behalf of his wife Sharon. According to the girls, their Uncle Harry was truly loved, and will forever be missed.
Campus Minister Michael Page and the NCCU Division of Institutional Advancement coordinated the memorial service, where Page offered prayers. Kenneth Ray, former New York alumnus president, and Chancellor James Ammons spoke at the memorial.
“Glenn’s death lets us know one thing: Life is precious. Let tomorrow tell its own story, because no one knows for sure if they’ll get home tonight,” said Ammons.
According to Sharon Glenn, she had to answer a painful question asked by their 7-year-old son Jaylan: “Mommy why are you crying?”
Sharon Glenn said she wore sunglasses at first so that Jaylan wouldn’t see her crying. Five days later she had to tell Jaylan that his father would not be coming home again.
Harry Glenn worked for two years as an assistant vice president for Marsh & McLennan.
According to Sharon Glenn she knew immediately her husband was in the tower when the attack occurred. He took pride in being punctual, she said. “Harry took being on time very seriously.”
Harry Glenn was born in Harlem. He entered NCCU in 1979.
“Harry was extremely focused; he knew where he was going and he knew how to get there,” said Dean Jernagin, a 1983 alumni.
Harry Glenn graduated from NCCU summa cum laude, and was immediately offered employment from AT&T upon graduation. He played a key role in development of the AT&T Prepaid Calling Card. According to Sharon Glenn, he always praised NCCU for providing him with a strong foundation.
“Harry loved NCCU, and we were planning on returning for a visit in 2002,” said Sharon Glenn.
“If he were here, he would advise NCCU students to stay focused. 'If you can conceive it and believe it, then you can achieve it' was one of his favorite quotes. I don’t think Harry could have accomplished anything more in his life.“
“I think God must have allowed Harry to accomplish more than most people, because he knew he would call him home,” Sharon Glenn said.
Harry Glenn was passionate about his family, old school rap, sports, and reading.
“I often teased Harry about being a walking sports encyclopedia. If you needed any sports facts, Harry knew them,” she said.
According to Sharon Glenn, her husband was the most down to earth, perfect gentleman anyone could meet.
“He wasn’t out for any credit, he was just focused on staying committed,” said Sharon Glenn.
“Jaylan and I miss Harry the most at night. That’s my crying time and Jaylan’s computer time,” she said.
“Harry taught him to surf the Internet. “
“I will always miss Harry, but I don’t think of Harry as being gone. I just know he’s watching over Jaylan and I from heaven.”
