George W. Bush’s $1.96-trillion spending plan includes $48 billion
that would be pumped into education, including $1 billion to establish
a “Math and Science Partnership Fund” to strengthen K-12 math and science
education and $5 billion to establish a “Reading First” initiative.

to hire 100,000 new teachers. He has also proposed modernizing schools
by rebuilding outdated buildings, wiring every classroom to the Internet
and training students and teachers to
use the technology.

A number of liberal groups have swung into action to try to convince
supporters of Green Party candidate Ralph Nader, to return to the Democratic
fold. Vice President Al Gore’s supporters are increasingly concerned that
support for the left-leaning Nader in several critical swing states, including
Ohio, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin may cost Gore the election.
