Doctoral programs surveyed
By Tauheedah Aquil
Echo Staff Writer

The National Association of Graduate-Professional Students released the results of its 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey, where students graded their doctoral programs’ implementation of educational practices recommended by the National Academy of Science, and Association of American Universities, and other educational leaders.

The survey was conducted on the web between March 30 and August 15, 2000, and was open to anyone who had been enrolled in a doctoral program for at least one semester since January 1, 1995. More than 32,600 current and recent doctoral students from over 5,000 doctoral programs at about 400 graduate institutions participated.

Potential graduate students can use this online tool as a resource to help them pick a grad school. Students can view program ranks from 1,300 universities in the United States and Canada.

The site also allows students to view program reports from these universities, and view discussion boards that dialogue about different ways to improve graduate education and ways to improve the survey.

Each doctoral program has its own discussion board where students and faculty can discuss assorted aspects of the program.

Visitors to this site can create their own customized ranking system by choosing an importance weight, from minimal importance to maximal importance, for criterions such as the program climate, career guidance, placement services, professional development, among others.
