As I walked to the center of the field with Coach Rudy Abrams yesterday, there were nothing but cheers coming from the NCCU Eagle football team and fans. I’m sure he was very proud of his team and his coaching skills.
I was steadily thinking about the season that had just ended...and the possible dreams for Coach and his players. I was also thinking about whether or not he is right for this program.
This year, the former top-ranked defense in NCAA football held the number one rusher in the MEAC, and one of the best in I-AA football, to his lowest rushing performance of the season-to-date for the Aggies.
The Eagles held Maurice Hicks, the invincible man of rushing talent, to just a 58 yard performance.
I give credit to great coaching on that fact! So, Rudy Abrams leads the critics of his coaching, 1-0.
Lets fast-forward to the game against Cheyney. Okay, I know what you’re saying—”Who is Cheyney?”
Cheyney is a university that plays in a Pennsylvania conference. The teams in their league are very competitive and good.
This was a good choice for Coach to play this game. The fact that the Eagles were superior against the Wolves was fantastic.
Coach, don’t get happy yet you lead the series 2-0.
Virginia State was a game that could have quieted a lot of fans.
The tragic crimes against America in New York forced all CIAA games to be canceled for the weekend of Sept. 15. Many people said the Eagles needed this win for a true conference test.
We will never know and Coach will have to hear about that game until next season. I think the Eagles would have won, but my opinion does not attest for the opinion of fans and alumni.
Coach, you are still ahead 2-1.
Edward Waters College was a huge win and a big controversy to people around the campus as to why the Eagles played that game.
I know why, but as a part of sports information I am not allowed to say.
So, Coach, the score is now tied.
Winston-Salem State and Virginia Union were good games for the Eagles, with freshman quarterbacks, to try and win in.
The fact that they held WSSU to a low score, with the defense on the field for most of the game, is a credit to coaching and the defense themselves.
The game against VUU was a spanking. The Eagles did not get on track early and Larry Edwards, VUU’s best rusher was awesome.
Sorry Coach, but the score in the series is now tied, 3-3.
The game against Johnson C. Smith was an overall great performance for both the team and Abrams. I have to give Coach the win in the series, 4-3.
The final word from me, as a “Big Mouth On Sports”, is that I am in favor of Coach Abrams staying.
Now, to all of the fans, you are traders. You come to the games when he wins, and you don’t come to away or home games when he looses. But you are the first people to run your mouths.
