Alumna leaves large monetary gift to NCCU

A N. C. Central alumna recently left $225,726 to NCCU in her last will and testament.

Evna L. Penn graduated from NCCU in 1939. She received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in commerce at NCCU.

She later continued her studies at New York University. For over 35 years, Penn was a business education teacher in the New York school system.

Upon retirement, Penn returned to her hometown of Winston-Salem, where she became active in her church, as well as, a community volunteer.

A native of Forsyth County, N.C., Penn never married or had children. She died Sept. 8 at Wake Forest Baptist Center.

Chancellor James H. Ammons will set up a scholarship in honor of Penn.

The money will be used to help students that have a substantial financial need, and wish to obtain a degree in the area of business and post-secondary educational programs. This scholarship is also available to band members.
