N.C. Central University’s search for a few good men came to an end last Thursday evening in the New School of Education Auditorium, at the first annual Mr. NCCU Pageant titled “A Few Good Men.”
The winner, senior Rande`l Johnson, called his victory a blessing.
“For the campus community to embrace me in such a positive way is simply wonderful,” said Johnson.
Johnson said that as Mr. NCCU, he plans to promote positive campus activities.
“I plan to put the spirit of NCCU back where it needs to be,” said Johnson.
Five contestants ran for each class with the exception of the sophomore class, whose contestant, Jeffrey Davidson, ran solo.
Miss NCCU Candis Jones said she wants strong black males to help her with her platform.
“My reason for starting a Mr. NCCU pageant is because I want more positive black male representation on and off our campus,” said Jones.
Contestants were required to have at least a 2.5 G.P.A. and no disciplinary actions. The panel of four judges was looking for quality of presentations, poise, and character from each of the contestants.
Contestants modeled outfits, and demonstrated talents including dance, singing, poetry and playing musical instruments.
The winners for each class were freshman Rodriguez Briscoe, sophomore Jeffrey Davidson, junior Derek Morrison, senior Christopher Patterson and Mr. NCCU Rande`l Johnson.
David Gardner, first runner up for the seniors, took home an Eagle’s Spirit award. Morrison was elected Mr. Junior, and took home the People’s Choice award.
“This was an experience of a lifetime,” said Morrison.
The enthusiastic winners are all looking forward to fulfilling their duties.
“We worked hard and the brothers and I came together and made the pageant a success,” said Patterson.
Duties for the winners include escorting female representatives to school-related functions, community service, and attending all the games.
