Eagles bounce back, get consecutive wins
By Alonzo McMullen

After losing two games in a row, the N.C. Central University Eagles rebounded to win back-to-back games against Elizabeth City State University and Saint Augustine’s College.

NCCU vs SAC

In their first meeting since 1965, NCCU shut out Saint Augustine’s College 28-0 last Saturday at Enloe High School in Raleigh.

NCCU amassed 265 yards in total offense and scored 21 points in the first half. The Eagles scored their touchdown in the first quarter with a 5-yard run by Ray Chambers.

Later in that quarter, Eagle quarterback Lawrence Fuller connected with Nathaniel Fitch for a 25-yard pass to put NCCU up 14-0. The Eagle defense held the Falcons to four first downs and just 135 yards total offense.

When SAC got as close as the 1-yard line, DeLeon Raynor blocked their field goal and returned the ball to the Falcon 14-yard line. This set up a Chambers touchdown run. After that, wide receiver Fitch caught a Fuller pass to make the score 28-0. Chambers finished the game with 85-yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Fitch amassed 3 catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Fuller ended the game 5-of-13 for 93 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles defense was led by Leland Paul, who amassed 7 tackles, and Scheldon Connor who had 6 tackles.

Saint Augustine’s was led by quarterback Kyle Franklin with 9-of-18 successful passes for 93 yards and an interception. Defensively, the Falcons were led by linebacker Sammie Jenkins who had a game-high 11 tackles.

This game moved the Eagles to 3-2, 1-1 CIAA, while the Falcons fell to 0-6, 0-5 in the CIAA. NCCU plays Fayetteville State on Saturday while SAC has a bye.

NCCU vs ECSU

On Sept. 28, the N.C. Central University Eagles traveled to Kinston, N.C. to compete in the “Eagles in the East” classic at Kinston High School against Elizabeth City State.

The Eagles were trying to bounce back from a 22-7 conference home-opener the week before, against Virginia State, and they did, as they held the Vikings to just a field goal and won the game 13-3.

The Eagle defense forced the Vikings to four costly fumbles for the Eastern Division’s last place team.

The Eagles led 10-3 at halftime courtesy of a Brian Burke 30-yard field goal and a Lawrence Fuller 3-yard touchdown run. In the second half, Burke added another field goal to put NCCU up for good.

The Eagles were led by running back Donnie Pippen who amassed 97 yards on 22 carries.

Quarterback Fuller connected on 5-of-11 passes for 90 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Linebacker Bobby Brown led the Eagle defense with 8 tackles while Scheldon Connor had 2 sacks.
