Reader concerned with NCCU's "business as usual" approach to hate mail

Date: Feb. 22, 2000

Dear Campus Echo,

In reference to the hate mail article entitled "Anonymous threats mailed to HBCUs," in the February 10, 2000 Volume 91, Issue #5 of the NCCU Campus Echo, Historical Black Colleges and Universities such as North Carolina Central University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, St. Augustine’s College, Shaw University and Barber-Scotia all recieved hate letters threatening to get rid of "us" minorities.

The letters had messages laced with racial slurs and expletives. What concerned me was how NCCU in particular decided to go along with "business as usual."

That is scary, that something that has the possibility to be so serious, is taken so lightly.

I do not live on campus anymore, however, I do have those students who live on campus in my prayers because we never know when or where it might take place.

I don’t want to think so negatively but just imagine how sorry we might be if we take this nonchalantly.

Thanks for listening.
Antoine Calloway
