Interim Provost Takes Helm
By Deneesha Edwards
Assistant Editor-in-chief

simmons
Beverly Washington Jones

Beverly Washington Jones was appointed interim provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs Jan. 1, to fill the job vacated by former Provost Lucy Rueben in December.

Rueben was forced out in the midst of faculty complaints about contract delays, tenure denials, the failure to distribute money to academic departments in a timely manner, and numerous communication failures.

Faculty morale had hit a low point, according to some faculty senate members.

Jones' appointment has been well received by many faculty members.

For four years Jones has served as dean of NCCU’s University College.

She has been a history professor, executive director of NCCU Institute for Minority Issues and director of community service programs.

Jones received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history at NCCU and her PhD in history at UNC-Chapel Hill.
