It’s February. It’s black history month.
The N.C. Central University sophomore class in conjunction with the Student Government Association is lining up a lot of activities to commemorate the black history month.
“Because we are a historically black college it is only right that we celebrate our legacy,” said sophomore class president and political science major Laronte Bryant.
The highlight of the events will be a second annual conference called “Think Tank” which will take place Feb. 12-15 offering numerous events each day.
Historically black colleges and universities all over the United States will come together at NCCU for the conference aimed at empowering and strengthening leadership capabilities in the black community.
This conference will consisting of workshops, forums and a career fair.
Other events in February will be the showing of movies showing movies like “Coming To America” “The Ruby Bridges Story” and “The Imitation of Life,” on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Miller-Morgan Building
There will be a convocation also held by the Sophomore Class Council, “Commemorating the Black Mecca,” which is based on the city of Durham and it’s past.
There are also plans to hold a candle light ceremony in the bowl on Feb. 24.
The events are structured to the benefit the students.
“We wanted the students of NCCU to come together and interact with each other,” said criminal justice major Atoria McAllister, a commitee member helping in the organization of the events
“I think the students will show interest and take advantage of the African American History programs that we are offering throughout the month.”
