The National Student Exchange has chosen six N.C. Central University students to participate in its program for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Simone Sandiford, Remy Yearwood, Marissa Williams, Denise Abdool, Rachel Williams and Elizabeth Jackson will be attending other universities participating in the NSE program.

Applicants for the NSE program must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and be in good standing with the university financially as well as having a clean disciplinary record. The application process includes an interview and submitted letters of recommendation.

"One of the direct benefits is an opportunity for students to sort of embrace diversity at another university within the United States of America," said Reginald Smith, coordinator of the program.

There are 18 students from other universities who will be attending NCCU for the 2000-01 academic year.

"NCCU currently has three students who will transfer here permanently in the fall," said Smith. "They love the experience so much that they decided to become NCCU Eagles. They don’t want to go back to their schools."

While attending host universities, NCCU students will continue to pay tuition and fees to NCCU. The only cost for the students will be room and board at the host campus, and a $100 application fee transportation costs.

Most of the students in the NSE program said they chose to participate in the program for a change of environment and for the experience.

"Florida International University was my first school choice when I came here and I wanted to use this chance to experience FIU," said Sandiford, a freshman form St. Joseph, Trinidad.

NCCU’s University College is currently working on recruitment in the NSE program for the 2001-02 academic year. Students interested in participating in the NSE program may contact Smith at 530-7360 or 530-6324.
