“Hey Bush, War for profit = Imperialism”, “No blood for Oil,” “Iraq never attacked us,” and “The earth is one, we are one people, we don’t need war” were some of the slogans displayed on banners carried by anti-war demonstrators in downtown Raleigh. They were faced by a smaller number of demonstrators across the street who supported President Bush’s policies regarding Iraq.

Many of the anti-war demonstrators said that they did not understand the reasons for attacking Iraq and are suspicious of the Bush administration’s push for the war.

“They want the Iraq oil,” said John Berger of Chatham County. They have accused Saddam of using Iraq’s resources for evil and they say that they want to use the resources for good.”

John Heuer of the North Carolina-based, Peace 1st organization said the government was acting against the wishes of the people.

“We are going to become ungovernable," said Heuer. "We are going to refuse orders. Iraq has not attacked us so we should not attack it."
