Welcome to the NCCU Department of Chemistry!
The Department offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science in Chemistry. At the Bachelor of Science level, the Department offers the ACS Certified Program, the Non-certified Chemistry Program, the Secondary Education Licensure Program as well as the Minor in Chemistry. At the Master of Science level the Department offers the Chemistry and Chemistry Secondary Education programs.
The Department is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the chemists' organization which sets professional and educational standards for chemists in the United States. Graduates who have completed an ACS-approved set of courses are certified with that organization.

Advantages of NCCU Chemistry Programs:
Smaller Class Sizes
Small classes allow students to enjoy a productive and educational environment and to receive individual attention from the instructor. In the Department of Chemistry, the largest class taught (Freshman General Chemistry I & II) is limited to 30 students. In the Sophomore year and beyond, most chemistry courses will have fewer than 20 students.
State-of-the-Art Equipment
The Department has purchased in the past few years and continues to acquire more state-of-the-art equipment for graduate and education and undergraduate research. Our analytical and physical chemistry laboratories have computer workstations with interface devices which allow rapid data acquisition and analysis. NCCU Chemistry students learn how to operate these devices and design their own experiments.
Undergraduate Research
The Department encourages undergraduate research on faculty-directed projects. Many of our students have presented their research results at local, state, and national conferences, and have had their names included on research publications.
Summer Financial Support
Monetary support is available for students wishing to remain in Durham to continue their work during the summer months. Students involved in research will have the opportunity to use NCCU's state-of-the-art instrumentation in their work.
Details about this and other financial support are offered on the Chemistry Department's undergraduate and graduate financial aid web pages.
