We intend to engage a group of scholars and practitioners in a critical analysis of the role and future of HBCUs and to articulate a set of policy recommendations to ensure their future viability. The symposium titled Setting the Agenda for Historically Black Colleges and Universities will be the culmination of North Carolina Central University’s 2010 Centennial Celebration.

We are commissioning papers by scholars who conduct research on issues of access and success for minority and low-wealth students. To help ensure the relevance of HBCUs in a contemporary society, the symposium will focus on transformational leadership and accountability; student success and access; diversification of the curriculum; community engagement, and comprehensive funding approaches. Local, regional, state and national leaders will engage in discussions engendered by insightful presentations.
