UNIVERSITY SEALS AND LOGOS

Official University Seal
The seal is the official and formal logo of the university to be used on
diplomas and other official university documents. It presents the communicative name, North Carolina Central University, in a distinctive, meaningful design. The seal represents many of the positive aspects of our university. Dr. James E. Shepard, the university’s founder, name is listed on the seal. He is depicted as a seeker of knowledge, with book in hand. He stands tall amidst the clouds, his eyes fixed upon the future. Below him are the motto “Truth and Service” and the institution’s founding date, 1910. The controlled use of typography contributes to the overall effectiveness of the seal. The typeface Melior has been selected to work with the official seal to create a coordinated “look” to all printed media of communications.

Reproduction Quality
Due to the illustrative nature of the artwork, maintaining reproduction
quality is essential. Only high quality, photographic methods, such as film negatives, film positives, or high resolution digital files should be used for reproducin the seal. Office-type quick copy machines will not copy the seal accurately. Please try to avoid this type of reproduction. Contact the Office of Public Relations for additional information.

Color Restrictions
The official colors of North Carolina Central University are University
maroon (PMS 208) and University gray (PMS 423). The official seal
was designed with these particular colors in mind. In the interest of
consistency and to preserve the design’s integrity, the seal may only be reproduced according to the color scheme specified in this manual.

If single-color representation is desired, the following color restrictions apply:

  • The seal itself may be reproduced in black or University maroon.
  • The seal must be reproduced on either a white or light gray
    background.
  • The one-color seal may be reproduced as a reversal, i.e. as
    white or a light background.

Reproduction Restrictions
The official seal may never be represented in a multi-color format. The official seal is one of the main elements in North Carolina Central University’s “graphic identity.” Therefore, it is imperative that reproduction of the seal is always sharp, clear and not distorted. The restrictions that follow will help ensure accurate reproduction.

The primary focus of the seal is the University’s founder and first president, Dr. James E. Shepard. In the interest of preserving the clarity of the founder’s image, the seal should not be reproduced in a size smaller than 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The founder’s name must always appear centered under the seal. Remember to use the same size type for both “Dr. James E. Shepard, Founder” and “Truth and Service.” For an electronic version of the seal, please contact the Office of Public Relations.

Use of the University Seal on Web sites

  • The university seal cannot be modified in any way. It should not be manipulated site wide.
  • If the seal is used on a site within the nccu.edu domain, it should be linked to one of the seal documents in the style area or to http://web.nccu.edu..
