Intellectual Property and Patent Law Course

Professor Cogdell teaches an undergraduate course to students enrolled in the BRITE program introducing the science students to intellectual property and patent law. A BRITE administrator, Dr. Susan Peacock will be working in the law school with the BPLI biotechnology patent and pharmaceutical regulation areas.

Human Genome Project Ethical, Legal and Social Implications Program

Professor Cogdell is currently working in collaboration with the Center for Genomics and Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine Department of Social Medicine on a variety of projects that we anticipate will further the development of diverse Ethical, Legal and Social Implications, ELSI (human genome project) scholars at NCCU and elsewhere. Activities with include supervising student researchers, working to develop a new grant proposal with UNC, course development and modification of existing Bioethics courses to incorporate more ELSI topics. The collaboration has also resulted in collaboration with the Center for Genetic Research, Ethics and Law at Case Western University. During spring 2007 she served as a faculty observer in the Salamanca Spain program affiliated with the Case program, and is developing a similar program in Costa Rica which will be held during the spring of 2008. Additionally, she had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Cleveland to work on her own research, attend a site visit and an advisory board meeting as a faculty trainee from the CGS. A doctoral student from the Center for Genetic Research, Ethics and Law through the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University will also participate in the course.

Universidad de Costa Rica, San Jose International Program – Comparative Bioethics and Policy
The law school will offer a Comparative Bioethics and Policy course in the spring of 2008. The course will be held at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. The program director for the international program is Professor Cogdell. The lead professor at the University of Costa Rica is Professor Jimmy Washburn, an Associate Professor in the School of Philosophy who specializes in Medical Ethics. Students will learn about international biobanking focusing on biobanking for research, therapeutics and conservation.

Texas Southern University
Institute for International and Immigration Law

On October 20, 2006, a joint program was held with the Institute for International and Immigration Law at the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, TX. The title of the program was global intellectual property. The seminar showcased the technology of the law school. Professor Cogdell traveled to Houston and Professor Smith was video conferenced in from Durham, NC. Other collaborative activities should occur in the future.
