International Program

Course: Comparative Bioethics and Policy
Spring 2008

Unlike the traditional international programs held in the summer, this course would be held during the spring semester and would involve students spending their spring break in Costa Rica taking the course. The course is a 2-credit team taught course. The course will meet twice before spring break for 3 hours each and once after spring break for 3 hours. During spring break students will meet for 3 - 4 hours per day for a total of 20 hours. The course will be limited to 10 – 15 students. Students would be required to pay a fee of $2,000 which will be used for flight, lodging and other course/program activities in Costa Rica. Students anticipating enrolling in the course can participate in a payment plan throughout the fall semester to save money for the trip. Registration will be through the regular registration process but if students fail to complete payment for the trip they will have to be dropped from the course because they will miss too much of the course to complete it successfully. The course will be open to NCCU law students and graduate students. The course will meet the requirements for the BPLI certificate program.

The course will be held at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. The program is modeled after a similar program Professor Cogdell attended this spring break in Salamanca, Spain at the University of Salamanca. The lead professor at the University of Costa Rica is Professor Jimmy Washburn, an Associate Professor in the School of Philosophy who specializes in Medical Ethics.

Non-NCCU students can participate in the program for no credit by paying a non-student program fee of $2,500.00
