Heart to Love-Hand to Serve

As has become tradition, North Carolina Central University celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in service to others. Appropriately titled, “Truth and Service Day,” NCCU students hosted residents of the Urban Ministries of Durham, conducted Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) for Durham citizens and packaged 80,000 meals in partnership with Duke University to support Stop Hunger Now and the Million Meals project. Operation Eagle Swoop

It was scary and realistic, but it was just a drill. A disaster unfolded on the campus of North Carolina Central University on Jan. 3 –gunshots, casualties, a hostage siege, reports of planted bombs and grenades, a massive law enforcement response.

But again: It was a simulation. No one got hurt.

The all-day emergency training exercise involved more than 350 participants and more than two dozen public safety agencies...
