DURHAM, N.C. — A group of North Carolina Central
University (NCCU) professors, concerned students and community members,
will host presentations on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 7 p.m. in
the McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium on the campus of NCCU. This gathering
has been organized to provide information on recent Hurricane Katrina
relief and reconstruction efforts, and to commit to the ongoing
work of rebuilding those areas devastated by the storm.
NCCU’s Student Government President, Renee Clark, will
speak on the travels she and several other NCCU students encountered
during their spring break to assist in the Katrina cleanup and
rebuilding efforts. During the meeting, professors will provide
personal perspectives on the catastrophe. Poetry and musicals
performances by the NCCU Jazz Band will be dedicated to the people
of the Gulf region. NCCU is working on ways to incorporate Katrina
relief assistance into the university’s service learning
curriculum.
In an effort to collect items for the next mission trip, attendees
are asked to bring toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors,
sanitary napkins, lotion, deodorant, shaving cream, bottled water,
canned vegetables, fruit, meat, beans and dry goods such as pasta,
cereal and beans.
This event is free and open to the public. For additional information,
please contact Bill Gural at (919) 530-5226.
