North Carolina Central University's School of Education provides qualified holders of at least one academic degree with the opportunity to earn a graduate degree in one of a dozen programs. The graduate programs are designed to assist students in developing a broad base of professional knowledge and research skills as well as the attributes of independent study, originality of thought, competence in research, and the application of critical thinking to professional problems.
Communication Disorders: The Communication Disorders program prepares master's level speech-language pathology professionals who prevent, assess and manage human communication disorders across the lifespan (from infants/toddlers to the elderly). Students enrolled in our graduate program acquire their professional competencies through pertinent educational coursework, clinical practicum, and research opportunities. Graduates of the department serve in a variety of employment settings including schools, hospitals, nursing homes, community clinics, home health, private practice, and national/international government education and health agencies. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, for licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists, and for the specialist license issued by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Counselor Education: The Counselor Education program prepares professional counselors to work in career counseling, school counseling, and mental health counseling where they promote development across the lifespan, advocate for systemic change, and respond to the complexity of human needs associated with a diverse society. Faculty are expected to teach and mentor students, serve the community and profession, and conduct and disseminate research.
Educational Technology: The Educational Technology program is designed to prepare graduates to serve as information and communication technologists in a variety of professional ventures among which are public schools, institutions of higher education (college resource centers), business, industry, and professional schools such as medicine, law, dentistry, and nursing. The program is designed to provide students the theory, practical tools and techniques necessary to analyze, design and manage an instructional resource program. The Educational Technology graduate program has two tracks, 077 – Computer Specialist Licensure Track (requires an "A" Teaching License) and the Educational Technology Non-Licensure Track.
School Administration: The program of study for the Master of School Administration (MSA) degree is designed to prepare visionary school leaders for the public schools of North Carolina and the nation. The MSA program combines course work, field experiences, and an internship experience as the principal means of providing MSA candidates with essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for exemplary school leadership, particularly in preparation for diverse cultural contexts and as advocates for social justice.
Special Education: The Special Education program prepares graduates to be professional educators and leaders in the field of special education for students with mild disabilities in the degree and licensure areas of behavioral-emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and visual impairments with or without a concentration in orientation and mobility. Graduates demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of all special educators as defined by The Standards for the Preparation and Licensure of Special Educators, The Council for Exceptional Children, the initial and advanced competencies of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and the Standard for Beginning Teachers of the Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium.
Physical Education (College of Behavioral and Social Sciences): This program is a practitioner-oriented program for professionals seeking additional expertise in physical education teaching. Emphasis is placed on current national trends and issues throughout the curriculum.
Family and Consumer Sciences (College of Behavioral and Social Sciences): The Department of Human Sciences offers the Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with Licensure. This degree program leads to a teaching certification at the graduate level. All graduate majors are expected to hold membership in the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).
School Media Coordinator (School of Library and Information Sciences): The school media coordinator concentration provides experiences throughout the curriculum which enable the graduate to develop and implement plans to ensure effective management of the school media center as an integral part of the educational program.
Programs for the preparation of elementary, middle, and secondary teachers at the bachelor's level or master's level and for the preparation of school counselors, school administrators, supervisors, special education teachers and school media coordinators at the master's level are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Teacher licensure programs are accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The program in Communication Disorders is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Programs in Counselor Education are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Orientation & Mobility concentration in Special Education is accredited by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
