Requirements for the Master of Education in Communication Disorders

The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech/Language Pathology of the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association (ASHA) nationally accredits the academic program in Speech-Language Pathology.

  1. Completion of the program is contingent upon completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of "B", 3.0 or better. Students without the requisite undergraduate degree in Speech/Language Pathology will be required to complete additional hours in normal speech, language, and hearing processes. Admission to the program is contingent upon full-time enrollment of no less than 9 semester hours each semester. In addition, 12-month continuous enrollment is required. Students must enroll during the two 6 week summer sessions.
  2. Required professional specialization courses:
    1. EDSH 5790, a minimum of 6 semester hour
    2. A minimum of 30 hours from:
      EDU 4750, 4760, 4770, 4780; EDSH 5700, 5710, 5720, 5721, 5722, 5723, 5724, 5725, 5730, 5740, 5745, 5750, 5751, 5752, 5755, 5760, 5770, 5780, 5785, 5795, 5796 or 5797. (No more than 9 hours can be from 4000 level course
  3. Required research courses:
    1. EDGR 5910, and EDGR 5920 or EDSH 5795
    2. EDSH 5800, Computer Utilization for Research and Clinical Applications in Communication Disorders; or
      EDGR 5900, Thesis and Oral Examination
  4. Students will follow a logical progression of courses, beginning with normal processes courses which lead into disorders courses.
  5. Students will take 52 hours of required courses (15 required courses and 6 hours of practicum), 2 hours of seminars, and 12 hours of electives.
  6. Successful completion of a clinical practicum experience in the University speech and hearing clinic and at approved off-campus clinic sites. The current minimum is 475 clock hours, including 25 hours of observation.
  7. Successful completion of a comprehensive written examination or a passing score on the National Examination in Speech Pathology and Audiology (Praxis II).
  8. Successful completion of a portfolio or an oral examination covering the thesis.
