The application process is open to all students enrolled in Durham Public Schools, local charter and private schools. Students are required to complete the JDC-ECHS magnet school application online as well as the JDC-ECHS paper application and return them both during the magnet school application period. The paper application includes basic demographic information, a short answer response section, transcripts, and attendance profiles from the 7th and 8th grade. Additionally, three recommendations (administrators, academic teacher, and community member) must be submitted. JDC-ECHS targets students who come from backgrounds that are socioeconomically disadvantaged, first generation college goers, and English language learners. Students who are highly responsible and eager for an academically challenging program of rigorous study, possess maturity to handle extended independence, interest in science, math and or technology, and a strong desire to succeed are encouraged to apply. The required number of high school courses and minimum college level courses are explained by Durham Public Schools personnel during an orientation session.
