Welcome to my SOE Home Page

The dust has cleared and IT has gotten all of our web server permissions in place, so all SOE faculty and staff now have a place to call their own on the WWW. I have decided to "move-in" first so as to offer assistance to my neighbors as they set up their sites - design tips, accessibility suggestions, and any other support I can offer.

Normally I go with a site created from scratch for any work I do (the main SOE site is one such example), but for this site I have gone with a pre-made, or "themed" design instead, for a number of reasons:

bullet

I want to show faculty just how easy it is to create good-looking, and accessible, pages with little or no graphic design experience

bullet

I am under some tight deadlines this summer, so I have little time to create my own graphics (and I prefer not to use ones I have already created)

bullet

I want a fresh look for my site, and using pre-made themes allows me to change the look when I wish

bullet

I simply like the look of some of the themes included with FrontPage

My authoring program of choice is Microsoft's much-maligned FrontPage (the version I am using is the latest, FP2002, which can be purchased stand-alone or as part of OfficeXP). Web authoring can be performed using any of several programs - Fusion, Dreamweaver, GoLive!, FrontPage, to name a few - or by actually hand-coding the pages using a text editor such as Notepad. I have tried all methods (hand-coding is best, but takes a TON of time) and always come back to FrontPage.

For faculty and staff I recommend whatever "feel right" but have made official recommendations of either FrontPage or NetObjects Fusion - both work well for beginners, or those with little time to spend creating pages or entire sites - and both are WYSIWYG.

Within these pages I will try to offer suggestions and resources for creating pages and sites, obtaining and/or editing graphics, making pages and sites accessible for ADA compliance, and will let you know how and when you can contact me.

Enjoy!
