CRT - Application Requirements, Forms and Instructions
The Department of Special Education at NCCU received a four year grant from the US Department of Education to fund graduate students to earn licensure and a degree in special education and to become dually licensed or highly qualified in a content area. The CRT grant will reimburse all tuition and fees for participants (except health insurance), provide money for books, and money for travel to professional conferences.

Requirements of the Grant
The CRT grant funds students pursuing a graduate degree in special education who have or are willing to complete a dual license in either elementary education, middle grades or a secondary license in Math, English, Comprehensive Science or Social Studies.
The US Dept. of Education requires that students who are funded by the grant repay the scholarship/loan by working two years for every year (21 hours) funded by the grant.
The CRT grant requires that all participants complete a summer practicum experience of 175 hours working with students or families from a cultural community different than their own. The student’s advisor and the principal investigator of the grant must approve the practicum experience.
Application Information
Applicants should complete the following application procedures:
- Complete the application to the NCCU graduate program which includes official transcripts, GRE scores and two reference letters.
- Have your principal, supervisor, or advisor complete the attached reference form.
- Completion
of the CRT form indicating
a) A commitment to repay the scholarship/loan
b) Evidence of a current license in regular education or a plan for completing a license in elementary education, middle grades, or secondary education.
c) Verification that you understand that there is a grant requirement to work one summer with students or families with cultural or social customs different than your own.
Scholarship/Loan Reimbursement Instructions
In order to be reimbursed for Tuition, fees, and book stipends you must have earned an A or a B in the course you are requesting reimbursement for. Should you receive below this grade in any of the courses your reimbursement will be adjusted accordingly removing the reimbursement for the course (es) that did not meet the requirements required by the CRT Grant Program.
It is important to remember that an A or B grade average is required. If there are several incompletes or below the grade required you will be reassessed to remain in the program.
The Following are the Guidelines for Requesting Reimbursement
At the end of each term that you are requesting reimbursement you are required to notify the Community Partners Office that you are requesting reimbursement for: (Some scholars only request reimbursement when needed but remain in program) Please report other Financial Aid received.
- Your Name
- Your Current Address and Contact Numbers
- Term (ie: Spring 2004, summer 1, 2004, etc.)
- Provide Student ID. Student Pin # is optional, however it usually makes it quicker to process papers from CRT Program Office for the reimbursement.

Upon receipt of your request The CRT Grant Program Office will gather your term invoice information from Banner.
The Office will then verify your grades to insure that the conditions have been met and a check request will be prepared to reimburse you accordingly based upon your grades.
There is a book stipend of 75.00 per course whether or not a book was required. You will receive this for each course qualified.
The CRT grant also provides funds for additional training/information needs:
- Travel for a conference pertaining to the course of study: this must be requested no less than 2 months prior to travel.
- Membership costs for membership in
Council for Exceptional Children.
The funds used for this will be added to your financial obligation.
Please Note: Service obligation is based on the credits that you received financial assistance for, rather than dollar amount of assistance.
