Can I apply for Financial Aid?

Of course! For post-baccalaureate studies loans are available.

Are there any scholarships or financial assistance?

Can I work while in school?

It depends on the program in which you are enrolled. If you are enrolled in the licensure only program, the answer is “yes.” The course offerings are catered to the non-traditional student.

How long will it take for me to finish the program?

It depends upon your individualized course of study and how many courses you will take each semester. Some programs, such as Communication Disorders, require full-time enrollment.

Why might I consider a Second Degree if I am enrolled in a licensure only program?

Some students have taken no courses in the area in which they are seeking licensure; therefore they will have to take all the required courses. The courses required for obtaining an initial license through the licensure-only program may be the same courses required to obtain an undergraduate degree, in addition to completing a concentration area along with a few extra courses. Thus, you might choose to get a second degree along with a license.

What courses will I have to take?

The Program Coordinator in the Content Area determines Requirements for Licensure-Only students and others. You will need a University Catalog, the Teacher Education Manual and Curriculum checklists from your content area in order to be fully informed of your program.

For those students in master’s-degree programs, you will need to check with your advisor. Your advisor will provide you with the required course sequence.

Are all of the classes offered online?

Some of the classes are offered online through distance education, and many are offered in the evening to serve our non-traditional student population.

What is the process for registering for courses at other UNC universities?

Students regularly enrolled in a full-time degree program at North Carolina Central University may enroll by inter-institutional registration through NCCU for a course or courses at Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before enrolling in a course at Duke, N.C. State, UNC-G, UNC-CH, or UNC-Charlotte, you must receive certification from the appropriate dean that the course is relevant to your degree program, and that the equivalent course is not available at NCCU.

Enrollment by inter-institutional registration during a regular term is limited to two courses per semester for a graduate (or professional) student, provided that he/she is also registered for at least three credit hours at NCCU.A Summer School student must be enrolled in at least one summer school course at NCCU in order to enroll by inter-institutional registration at the other institution.

A student taking a course at Duke, N.C. State, UNC-G, UNC-CH, or UNC-Charlotte through inter-institutional registration will be billed by NCCU for all courses taken. There is no additional charge for any fees associated with taking the course. Grading for a course taken by inter-institutional registration will be in accordance with the grading system of the institution where the course is taken. The grade will appear on the student’s transcript and will be counted the same as though the course had been taken at NCCU.

Why does NCCU require a copy of my immunization records?

North Carolina law requires that an immunization record for each newly admitted (or readmitted) North Carolina Central University student (undergraduate, graduate, professional, or special student) be on file at NCCU prior to enrollment.

How do I apply for NC Department of Public Instruction licensure once I have completed my program?

Obtain the Licensure Application packet; complete the forms and obtain signatures as needed; attach the required documents and deliver to the Licensure Office in the H.M. Michaux School of Education Building.

If you completed a program in the School of Education that was not a teacher education program per se, such as Communication Disorders, School Counseling, or Educational Technology, and wish to work in the public schools of North Carolina, you also need to complete the licensure application packet.
